An 11-year-old girl was reportedly washed away on the afternoon of Friday 13 August in Meschers-sur-Gironde, near Royan (Charente-Maritime).
The girl was swimming with a whole group from a summer camp in Orleans, when she was caught by the tide. Significant relief resources have been deployed.
In total, 26 rescuers and police officers intervened at the scene. Mobilized people managed to save another girl dragged by the water, reported France Blue.
Despite several hours of searching, the 11-year-old girl has not been found.
A psychological unit has been created to support the children of the summer camp, as well as the animators. The Saintes prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation.
