Chappell Roan: New Album Years Away Due to Songwriting Pace

Chappell Roan just dropped a new song, "The Subway," which got fans excited. But if you’re hoping for her second album soon, you might need to pump the brakes.

The 27-year-old singer recently told Vogue that her next big project isn’t even a thing yet. "The second project doesn’t exist yet," Roan explained in an interview published on Monday, August 4. "There’s no album. There’s no collection of songs."

Earlier this year, when she released her single "The Giver," eagle-eyed fans spotted something interesting in its lyric video. A fake DVD menu popped up, showing track titles like "To Be Yours" and "Read & Make Out." While these might be real song names, it seems we won’t be hearing them anytime soon.

Roan explained that her debut album, ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,’ took five years to write. She figures the next one will take at least as long. "I’m not that kind of songwriter who can quickly produce songs," she admitted.

The Grammy winner also shared that rushing the creative process just doesn’t work for her. It won’t lead to good music.

"I don’t think I make good music when I force myself to do something," she said. She’s even seen comments from fans like, "She’s everywhere but that damn studio." But she pointed out that even if she worked 12 hours a day, every single day, it wouldn’t magically make an album appear faster.

Even though ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’ came out in September 2023, it was really 2024 that launched her into the spotlight. Her viral performances at Coachella and on Saturday Night Live helped make her a household name. Since then, she’s released three more singles: "The Giver," "The Subway," and "Good Luck, Babe!" However, she hasn’t given any hints about when her second album might drop.

Last month, Roan announced a ‘Visions of Damsels & Other Dangerous Things’ pop-up tour. This special tour includes eight shows in New York City, California, and her home state of Missouri.

She shared her excitement on Instagram on July 24. "I’m super excited to announce my Pop-Up Shows in New York, Kansas City, and Los Angeles this fall," she wrote. "I love these three cities so much and wanted a chance to do something special before I go off to write the next album."

Tickets for all these shows will be sold through a lottery system. This means only fans chosen in a random drawing will get the chance to buy them.

Roan explained her reasoning behind this ticket method. "Since we are only going to three cities, I wanted to make sure 1. we keep ticket prices as accessible as possible and 2. try to keep them away from resellers," she stated. If you don’t get picked to buy tickets, you’ll receive an email with details about a waitlist starting August 7.
