CFE Warns of Potential Fraud Amid Nationwide Smart Meter Installation Drive

The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has been conducting door-to-door operations to install new smart meters with AMI technology. These meters provide more accurate readings, helping to prevent overcharging and giving users a clearer picture of their energy consumption. The installation process is free, and technicians only need access to the meter, not the property itself.

Verifying CFE Workers

To avoid scams, it’s essential to verify the identity of CFE workers. They wear official uniforms, carry ID credentials, and arrive in marked CFE vehicles. Technicians also have an order number linked to the specific address they’re visiting. If you’re unsure, you can call the CFE hotline at 071 to confirm their identity.

Here are some key things to look out for:

  • Official CFE uniforms
  • ID credentials
  • Marked CFE vehicles
  • An order number linked to your address

If a worker asks to enter your home, you should refuse unless you’ve requested a specific service or inspection. If you suspect a scam, report it to the authorities immediately. You can also report any irregularities or concerns through the CFE app or by calling 071.

Consequences of Tampering with Electricity Meters

The CFE is using this opportunity to crack down on electricity theft. Workers are authorized to cut off the power supply if they detect irregularities, such as “diablitos” (devices used to alter electricity consumption). Tampering with meters is considered a crime and can result in fines of up to 249,000 pesos and imprisonment for 3 to 10 years, as per Article 369 of the Federal Penal Code.

The CFE has been working to replace old meters since April, and while they haven’t specified how many homes are still pending, they assure that all households will receive the new meters as it’s a free service. If you’re still waiting, you can contact your nearest CFE office to inquire about a scheduled installation date.
