CFE Offers Nearly Free Electricity in Regions with Extreme Climates this Summer

Mexico’s state-owned electricity company, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), is rolling out a summer subsidy program to help households in hot regions save on their energy bills. The program, which runs from May 1 to October 2025, aims to provide relief to residents in areas with extreme temperatures.

Who qualifies for the subsidy?

The subsidy applies to households in regions with temperatures above 33°C, specifically in the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Sinaloa, Sonora, Nayarit, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. Residents in these areas will automatically receive a discounted rate on their electricity bills, with savings estimated between 20% and 50% of their normal consumption.

The subsidy is available to households with tariff codes 1C, 1D, 1E, and 1F, which are designated for areas with high temperatures. However, users with the Domestic High Consumption (DAC) tariff are not eligible for the subsidy, as their energy usage exceeds the subsidized limits.

How to check if you’re receiving the subsidy

CFE will automatically apply the subsidy to eligible households, so no action is required. To verify that you’re receiving the discount, check your electricity bill for the applied tariff and cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh). You can also check your account information through CFE’s website or mobile app.

To maximize your savings, consider adjusting your energy usage habits. For example, doing laundry and ironing during off-peak hours can help reduce your energy consumption.

The goal of the subsidy is to help households stay comfortable during the hot summer months without breaking the bank. By providing relief to residents in extreme climates, CFE aims to make a positive impact on people’s daily lives.
