CFE Offers Free Internet for Government Program Beneficiaries in Mexico

Most people would agree that getting online can be a real headache. Many internet companies charge a lot of money. Others simply can’t provide a good signal, especially in less populated areas. But there’s a surprising new player in the telecom world.

The Federal Electricity Commission, or CFE, usually handles power lines. Now, they’ve stepped into the internet business. This might seem strange at first. However, CFE has a big advantage. They already have wires reaching almost everywhere. This means they can bring internet to places where regular providers often can’t go. Traditional internet companies sometimes skip remote areas because it’s too hard to connect them. CFE’s existing network changes that.

A Year of Free Internet?

CFE recently rolled out a special program. It offers a full 12 months of free internet service. If you like it, you can keep it afterward for a much lower price than most providers charge. This service is mainly for mobile phones. They give you a special SIM card.

This SIM card comes with a solid package each month:

  • 5 GB of data for browsing.
  • Unlimited social media use.
  • 1500 minutes for calls.
  • 500 text messages.

One neat trick is that you can share your data with others. This doesn’t cost extra. Just remember, any data, calls, or texts you don’t use by the end of the month won’t carry over. Your plan simply renews with a fresh set each month.

Who Qualifies for the Free Service?

Getting this free internet isn’t for everyone. It’s set up for people who are part of specific government programs. If you receive a scholarship, a pension, or other federal aid under President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, you likely qualify. You can sign up directly for the CFE SIM card.

The service also targets people in specific “priority areas.” These are often marginalized communities. They usually have very little or no internet access from standard companies. If you don’t receive government aid and don’t live in one of these areas, the free option won’t be available to you.

Other Ways to Connect

Even if you don’t qualify for the free year, you can still get CFE’s internet. The company offers a modem you can buy. It costs 1145 pesos. After buying the modem, you can add data plans as needed. These plans range from 3 GB up to 100 GB per month.

For those in government programs, this free internet is a huge help. After the free year, the annual plan renews at a special rate. This lets you pick a data plan that fits your budget.

If you have questions, look for CFE “Internet for All” locations. They can tell you what documents you need. They can also check if your phone number works with the program.
