CFE Imposes Extra Charge on Electricity Bills in Mexico.

Electricity bills are about to get more expensive for some people. The Federal Electricity Commission, or CFE, is adding a new charge. This extra cost is for street lighting. It’s called the Public Lighting Right, or DAP.

People in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, will see this new charge on their bills. It’s 5% of their total bill. This means everyone’s bill will be different. The amount depends on how much electricity they use.

Some people are not happy about this. They think it’s unfair. Before, this cost was shared among everyone. Now, each person pays their own share. The National Human Rights Commission, or CNDH, is trying to change this. They don’t think it’s fair to charge people different amounts.

The CNDH is talking to the Supreme Court of Justice. They want the court to decide if this new charge is okay. Until then, people in Isla Mujeres have to pay the extra cost. If they don’t, they might have problems with the CFE.

This isn’t the only extra cost that might show up on electricity bills. If you had your power cut off and you want it turned back on, you’ll have to pay a fee. This fee depends on how you pay your bill and how many wires you have.

Here’s how the fees work:

  • Monthly bills with one wire: 55 to 58 pesos
  • Every-other-month bills with one wire: 77 to 80 pesos
  • Monthly or every-other-month bills with two or more wires: 87 to 91 pesos

You have to ask for your power to be turned back on within 15 days. If you don’t, you might have to pay for a new installation. That’s more expensive.

The CFE is always looking for ways to make money. They might add more charges to your bill. It’s a good idea to check your bill carefully every month. That way, you can see if there are any new charges.
