Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is facing intense backlash for his recent comments about the Brahmin community. He has since apologized on social media, but the controversy has only escalated.
Kashyap’s trouble began when he weighed in on the controversy surrounding Anant Mahadevan’s film ‘Phule’, which was initially set to release on April 11. The film, starring Pratik Gandhi and Palak Lalwani, tells the story of social reformers Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule. However, its release was postponed to April 25 amid allegations of promoting casteism.
Controversy Escalates
Union Minister Satish Dubey was quick to respond, calling Kashyap a “despicable scoundrel” on X, formerly Twitter. Dubey warned that if Kashyap didn’t publicly apologize, he would ensure the filmmaker faced consequences.
Kashyap eventually apologized on Instagram, stating that although he couldn’t retract his words, he hoped the Brahmin community would spare his family. However, his apology did little to quell the outrage.
Police Complaint Filed
A lawyer from the Bombay High Court filed a police complaint against Kashyap in Mumbai. The complaint follows angry responses from users on Kashyap’s initial post, with some expressing violent sentiments.
The situation has put Kashyap in a difficult spot, with many calling for him to take responsibility for his comments. As the controversy continues to unfold, the film ‘Phule’ is now set to hit theaters on April 25.
