Celta relives the first game in its history

The friendlies of this autumn preseason will start in Vigo with an important aroma of nostalgia. The party that Celta and Boavista will play next Wednesday in Balaídos starting at 6:00 p.m. It will not only be Carvalhal’s first rehearsal in this preparation phase, but it will also mean the first act of the Centenary. The club from Vigo have baptized this campaign as ‘Camiño ao Centenario’.

The match between Galicians and Portuguese will be the reissue of Celta’s first match in its history, facing the same teams that were measured on September 23, 1923 in the Campo de Coia. 99 years later, Celta and Boavista will meet again very close to where they did then, at the Balaídos Stadium.

The first game after the merger between Vigo Sporting and Fortuna resulted in sky-blue win against the Portuguese (8-2), with Polo as the main protagonist, having scored four goals. Polo was the top scorer in Celta’s history until the day before yesterday, when Iago Aspas overcame his last obstacle to become the best sky-high scorer of all time. The moañés will be the figure in the reissue of that first game, recalling Polo in some way.
