Enhancing Celta’s Youth Development Structure
Celta has taken a significant step in bolstering its youth development setup with the appointment of Jan Westerhof as the new head of methodology for the club’s quarry. The 42-year-old Dutch coach brings a wealth of experience, having previously worked with the lower categories of Pachuca, a renowned Mexican soccer academy.
A Strategic Addition
Celta’s football director, Marco Garces, played a pivotal role in bringing Westerhof on board, having worked with him during their time together in the Mexican team. This move fills the position left vacant by Eduardo Covelo, who parted ways with Celta last October.
Aligning with the Club’s Vision
According to Celta, Westerhof’s appointment completes the club’s organizational chart, which prioritizes the development of its youth players. The goal is to ensure a uniform style of play across all teams and accelerate the growth of young footballers, with the aim of integrating them into the elite level at the earliest possible age.
A Commitment to Youth Development
Under the guidance of Claudio Giraldez, Celta remains committed to promoting youth players to its first team and giving them a leading role. The current squad features several homegrown talents, including Iago Aspas, Iván Villar, Sergio Carreira, Carlos Domínguez, Javi Rodríguez, Damián, Hugo Álvarez, and Hugo Sotelo. Additionally, reserve team players Fer López, Yoel Lago, and Miguel Román have also made appearances this season.
