AC Milan and Inter Milan’s plans to build a new stadium on the site of the current San Siro/Giuseppe Meazza have gained the approval of UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin. In a recent interview with SportMediaset, Ceferin expressed his disappointment with the state of Italian football infrastructure. He stated that despite Italy’s success in winning World Cups, European Championships, and UEFA Champions League titles, the country’s stadiums are among the worst in major European nations.
Ceferin believes the situation is “a shame” and that it’s time for change. He emphasized that discussions have been ongoing for years, but progress has been slow. “All I see are discussions,” Ceferin said, highlighting the need for collaboration between clubs, government, and local authorities to drive improvement.
Road to 2032 World Cup
The UEFA President is optimistic that significant upgrades can be made before Italy co-hosts the 2032 World Cup with Turkey. With seven years to go, Ceferin is confident that private investors will step in to support the necessary renovations. “The clubs need help from the government and city councils,” he said. “Private investors will invest.”
Ceferin’s comments come as Italy prepares to host a major international tournament, a task that will require significant investment in its infrastructure. While he is not overly concerned about the current state of the stadiums, he is adamant that change is needed. The new stadium planned by AC Milan and Inter Milan is seen as a step in the right direction, and Ceferin’s endorsement is likely to boost the project.
