The football world never stays quiet for long, especially when former rivals Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville get together. Things got lively on Sky Sports recently. The topic? Viktor Gyökeres and his debut for Arsenal last Saturday against Manchester United. Gyökeres played, but he didn’t manage to score or assist a goal. This performance sparked a serious debate about where he fits in Arsenal’s biggest matches.
The Carragher Challenge
Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool player, quickly threw cold water on the idea of Gyökeres being a guaranteed starter for Arsenal in their toughest Premier League clashes. He simply doesn’t see Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta using the Swedish forward from the start when facing the league’s top teams. Carragher explained his thinking clearly. He said he sees Gyökeres playing well and scoring goals, but when the truly big games come around, he believes Arteta will bring Kai Havertz back into the starting lineup. “I think that’s what’s going to happen,” Carragher stated, sounding very sure of his prediction.
Neville Fires Back
Gary Neville, who once captained Manchester United, was visibly surprised by Carragher’s take. He quickly pushed back, disagreeing strongly with his Sky Sports colleague. Neville couldn’t believe the idea that Arteta would bench Gyökeres for important matches. “He cannot leave Gyökeres out of the big games!” Neville declared, making his feelings on the matter perfectly clear.
The Tactical Twist
But Carragher wasn’t backing down. He quickly shot back, telling Neville that Arteta absolutely could leave Gyökeres out. Carragher felt that Kai Havertz is just too vital for Arteta’s plans to be dropped. “I don’t think that will happen,” he insisted. Neville, the former Manchester United defender, then offered a different idea. He suggested that Arteta might even find a way to play both Gyökeres and Havertz together in the same team. Neville pointed out that Arsenal really needed a top striker, and they brought one in. He added that he saw enough in Gyökeres to believe he will be a very helpful player for the club. Neville then touched on Gabriel Martinelli’s recent struggles, suggesting that perhaps Arteta would have to try putting Gyökeres and Havertz side-by-side to solve some of Arsenal’s attacking puzzles.
