When Manchester United recently stumbled, losing to Grimsby Town in the League Cup, you just knew someone was waiting to pounce. Grimsby, a team from England’s fourth division, pulled off a real shocker. It didn’t take long for Jamie Carragher to send a friendly jab toward his old pal, Gary Neville. Carragher, a Liverpool legend, never misses a chance to tease his fellow Sky Sports commentator. Neville, of course, spent his playing days as a defender for United, the “Red Devils.”
Carragher took to social media, sharing a video with a few ironic crying emojis. The video was from August 18. In it, Neville was in the Sky Sports studios, making a rather bold prediction. He confidently stated that “Manchester United will surprise some people” this season.
Neville’s comments at the time were pretty specific. He looked back at Chelsea’s first game last season. He recalled that no one thought Chelsea would end up in the top four or five. He then said he saw them play Manchester City. Neville remembered thinking, “Not bad, they’ll cause some damage this season, they are a good team.” He then applied this thinking to United. After watching them play Arsenal, Neville felt their performance was “very good.” He also mentioned he thought they would sign a goalkeeper. He really hoped they wouldn’t make the mistake of not signing one. Neville believed that with a new goalkeeper, plus the attacking players they showed against Arsenal, and a solid defensive line, United had potential. He also pointed out the benefit of having weeks off, with no Champions League or Europa League games. That’s when he repeated his big claim: “Manchester United will surprise some people.”
Well, after that League Cup defeat to Grimsby, Carragher’s playful mockery hit home. It just goes to show you how quickly things can change in football. And it’s a reminder that even the sharpest minds in the game can find their predictions coming back to haunt them. It’s all part of the fun, especially when rival legends are involved.
