Carolina Marín wins her seventh European title

“I have shown myself that I am once again at the level I want to be”Said Carolina Marín last week upon receiving the Royal Order of Sports Merit. Said and done, the 30-year-old from Huelva proved at the European Games in Krakow (Poland) that this statement was not a bluff. With her victory this Sunday over the Danish Mia Blichfeldt by 21-15 and 21-14 in 1h12, Carolina took the seventh continental gold of her career around her neck.

For the first time playing a European Games, which this year awarded the continental badminton scepter, Marín once again proved infallible at key moments: It has a record of 14-0 between the semifinals and the final of the European Championships, 6-0 in the World Cups and 2-0 in the Olympic Games. He did not fail either against Blichfeldt, 17th in the world ranking.

The first set settled it with a final partial of 6-0, and the second sentenced it with a 9-2. Since his return last year after a serious knee injury, Carolina has only lost against a European, Kjaersfeldt, at the 2022 Malaysian Open. And yesterday was the third title after her return (Madrid 2022 and Orleans 2023). Very green shoots before the World Cup in Copenhagen (21 to 27 August). “Very happy for my seventh European title. I feel like I keep improving, that’s the way to go,” Marin said.

The Spanish delegation closed the event with 57 medals, second in the medal table (last year there were 13 metals won), and six tickets to Paris 2024: three in archery, two in boxing and one in modern pentathlon.
