Spain’s Carolina Marin, seeded number one at the Canadian Open badminton, debuted in Calgary with a three-set victory over Switzerland’s Jenjira Stadelmann in the round of 16.
Stadelmann22 years old, number 69 in the world ranking, the first set was scored 21-19 but the Olympic champion and triple world champion reacted by winning the next two, 21-12 and 21-19.
Carolina Marín, six-time European champion, will face the Japanese Natsuki Nidaira in the quarterfinals, number 87 in the world ranking, who defeated the American Katelin Ngo in the first round.
In the men’s box the two participating Spaniards were eliminated: Luis Enrique Peñalver fell to the Brazilian Ygor Coelho 21-15 and 21-16, and Pablo Abián fell to the Japanese Takuma Obayashi 21-9 and 21-13.
