Carlos Alcaraz Returns to World No. 1 After US Open Victory

Carlos Alcaraz won the USA Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season

Carlos Alcaraz is back on top of the tennis world. He reached the number one spot in the global rankings this Monday. This climb happened just one day after he claimed the US Open title. That tournament was the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season.

The young Spanish player truly shined in New York. He secured his second major win of the year there. He had already lifted the trophy at Roland Garros earlier. This latest victory pushed him past Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the world rankings. Sinner had been the losing finalist at the US Open.

Men’s Rankings Shift

Looking at the rest of the men’s game, Germany’s Alexander Zverev held onto his third-place ranking. This is despite his exit in the third round of the US Open. Meanwhile, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, known for his record number of Grand Slam titles, moved up. He now sits in fourth place after reaching the tournament’s semifinals.

It was a tough week for Portugal’s Nuno Borges. After being knocked out in the second round, he fell out of the top 50. This is the first time since July 2024 he’s been outside that group. He dropped 11 spots, landing at 51st. On a brighter note, Jaime Faria climbed to 115th. However, Henrique Rocha saw a dip, moving down to 170th.

In men’s doubles, Francisco Cabral also experienced a slight drop. He fell five places and is now ranked 31st globally. This comes after he had matched the best-ever ranking for a Portuguese player in doubles, reaching 26th.

Women’s Tour Highlights

On the women’s side, Belarus’s Aryna Sabalenka remains the world’s number one. She solidified her lead by winning the US Open. The top three spots stayed exactly the same after the event. Poland’s Iga Swiatek holds steady at second place. The United States’ Coco Gauff rounds out the top three.

There was a notable rise for American Amanda Anisimova. She moved up to fourth place. Anisimova made it to the US Open final, marking her second straight major final loss. She had previously been defeated by Swiatek at Wimbledon.

Among the Portuguese women, Matilde Jorge (212th) and Francisca Jorge (215th) are getting closer. They are both steadily approaching the top 200 in the rankings.
