Carlo Ancelotti’s time at Real Madrid is drawing to a close. The Italian coach is reportedly set to leave the club after reaching a verbal agreement with the Brazilian Football Confederation. According to The Athletic, Ancelotti and Real Madrid have agreed on the terms of his exit, with the main issue being the compensation for the remaining year on his contract, which was extended until 2026 in December 2023.
The club is now focused on finding a replacement for Ancelotti, particularly for the Club World Cup. Xabi Alonso is the top contender, but his availability is uncertain due to Bayer Leverkusen’s tight schedule. The Spanish coach might not be able to take over in time for the tournament in the United States. Internally, Santiago Solari is considered a strong candidate, ahead of other club legends like Raúl González, who manages Real Madrid Castilla, and Álvaro Arbeloa, who coaches the Juvenil A team.
Ancelotti’s Legacy
Ancelotti returned to Real Madrid in 2021 after a successful first stint between 2013 and 2015. During his second spell, he has won numerous titles, including two LaLiga championships, two Copa del Rey trophies, and three UEFA Champions League titles. With 15 trophies, he is the most decorated coach in Real Madrid’s history. The club is expected to give him a fitting farewell, with an official announcement likely to be made before the end of the season, possibly after El Clásico against Barcelona on May 11.
