Caricom does not yet have a candidate for Commonwealth Secretariat

Caricom no cuenta todavía con candidato para Secretaría de la Commonwealth

The current president of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) and Prime Minister of Belize, John Briceño, reported that the regional organization still does not have a candidate for the General Secretariat of the Commonwealth of Nations (Commonwealth).

Briceño, through a brief statement released this Tuesday, said that the member states of Caricom will vote for a candidate, without specifying the date, ahead of the Commonwealth summit to be held next June in Kigali (Rwanda), in the one that will leave its next general secretary.

So far, within the countries that make up Caricom there are two candidates.

The first is Patricia Scotland, current Secretary General of the Commonwealth and born on the Caribbean island of Dominica.

Scotland, the first woman to lead the Commonwealth of Nations -made up of 54 countries-, was elected to the highest position of the entity at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting held in Malta in 2015.

The other regional candidate is Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica.

The election for the post of Commonwealth Secretary-General will take place during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting to be held June 20-25, 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda.
