Cardinals reject Carlos Martínez’s contract option

As anticipated, although it still generates some nostalgia, the Cardinals rejected the options on the contracts of Dominican pitcher Carlos Martinez and infielder Matt Carpenter.

The San Luis team decided to pay Martinez and Carpenter $ 500,000 and $ 2 million, respectively, to cut ties, resulting in the pitcher and infielder moving into free agency.

Martinez, one of the organization’s most successful international firms in recent years, had club options for 2022 ($ 17 million) and 2023 ($ 18 million), but the injuries – including a torn right thumb which ended his season on July 4 – and a drop in performance derailed what had been a stellar start to his career.
