Cardinals hand Giants their fifth straight setback

Dylan Carlson hit an RBI single in the ninth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 3-2 on Friday night.

Designated hitter Juan Yepez doubled with one out off Camilo Doval (0-1) in the ninth inning. Carlson’s timely hit drove in pinch runner Brendan Donovan.

Ryan Helsley (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings for the win. Mexican Giovanny Gallegos earned his sixth save.

After four innings without scoring, each team did so in the fifth. But the Giants ended up suffering their fifth straight setback and seventh in their last eight games.

For the Cardinals, the Venezuelan Yepez 4-1.

For the Giants, the Venezuelans Wilmer Flores 4-0, Thairo Estrada 4-2. The Mexican Luis González 4-1 with a run scored.
