It’s an often repetitive debate for fans of the MCU : the question of the freedom left by Marvel and disney to the filmmakers of his universe. Everyone still has the controversy in mind Edgar wright during’Ant-Man (2015) with the departure of the British filmmaker due to conflicting author visions with Disney. Many fans subsequently criticized the hyper-consensual aspect of certain films, which had no artistic flair of their own. And for good reason: Whether Alan Taylor (Thor 2), Kenneth Branagh (Thor), Jon Favreau (Iron Man 1 and 2), the Russo Brothers (Civil War), Jon Watts (Far From Home and Homecoming).. Few filmmakers seem to have given free rein to their artistic paw (if they have one).
The first Captain Marvel (2019), realized by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, has not escaped the rule. The feature film is an arbitrary production, without visual projections, nor any transcendence. However, all is not to be thrown in the MCU since Marvel and disney seems more determined to let the directors of MCU offer their creative vision of the project involved.
Taika Waititi proposed a Thor: Ragnarök very personal, ditto for James gunn and his Guardians of the Galaxy and Ryan coogler for his Black panther. The director Nia DaCosta, responsible for the remake of Candyman, took over The Marvels, the continuation of the adventures of Carol Danvers, which will also include Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellaini). Nick fury will also feature in the feature film, as teased Samuel L. Jackson last month.
In the last episode of the podcast Movies To Be Buried With hosted by Brett Goldstein (who plays Roy Kent in Ted Lasso), DaCosta opened up about her experience so far with Marvel Studios, which she describes as “a truly rewarding experience“.
“It’s just a really rewarding experience, it’s probably the best experience I’ve had with a studio entity or any type of Big Brother entity. I think Marvel is kind of a scapegoat in the industry – everyone’s like, ‘Oh, you know, they control everything’, well, they’re really open and receptive and they want to hire you because they want you to be yourself. So that was really fun. ”
Captain Marvel 2, or The Marvels, will hit theaters in November 2022.
