Cape Verde U-17 Gold Medal-Winning Coach Jorge Conceição Dies at 54

A heavy cloud hangs over the football pitches of Cape Verde today. Jorge Conceição, the respected coach of the country’s Under-17 national team, passed away this morning on São Vicente island. He was 54 years old. The news came from Mário Semedo, president of the Cape Verdean Football Federation.

Known widely as “Djodje,” Conceição was much more than just a coach. He was a guiding light for countless young athletes. Many remember him as one of the most successful coaches in youth football across Cape Verde. His influence was huge, playing a crucial part in growing the sport for the next generation.

Just recently, Djodje led his Under-17 squad to an incredible victory. They snagged the gold medal at the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) Games. This big event took place in Timor-Leste between July 17 and July 27. It was a proud moment for the nation and a testament to his coaching skill.

Mário Semedo shared more details through Rádio de Cabo Verde (RCV). He explained that Jorge Conceição had been receiving care at Baptista de Sousa Hospital in São Vicente. The coach was battling a “serious clinical condition.” As of now, the exact cause of his passing has not been made public.
