Now, after a long wait, “Santosh” is finally coming to Indian screens. This acclaimed film, directed by Sandhya Suri, is set to release on an OTT platform. It’s a moment many cinephiles have eagerly anticipated, marking the first time Indian viewers can experience this compelling drama.
“Santosh” first made waves at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024. It premiered in the festival’s Un Certain Regard section, a special category that highlights unique and daring works. The film quickly earned strong reviews for its sharp storytelling and important themes.
However, its journey to Indian audiences hit a snag. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) initially blocked its release. Reports indicated the CBFC requested numerous cuts to the film. The filmmakers, however, stood their ground. They felt these changes would alter the movie’s core message too much. This disagreement led to a major dispute. The film was originally slated for a January 10 theatrical release in India. But the standoff with the CBFC forced its postponement.
Now, that obstacle has cleared. The film will stream on Lionsgate Play starting October 17. This means, from that date, “Santosh” will be fully available in India.

At its heart, “Santosh” dives into serious issues. The film explores the complex dynamics of caste, gender, and power in rural India. It tells the story of Santosh, a young widow. She takes her deceased husband’s job in the police force through a compassionate appointment.
Her new role soon leads her into a dark case. Santosh is tasked with investigating the rape and murder of a Dalit girl. This investigation quickly pulls her into a web of power games and entrenched caste issues. Actress Shahana Goswami and Sunita Rajwar play key roles in the film.
