Cannabis may be beneficial for treating fibromyalgia in women

A new study shows that cannabis is effective at promoting sleep, deepening and prolonging the sleep cycle, alleviating pain in fibromyalgia

According to a new study published by the US National Institutes of Health, Cannabis may play an ‘important role’ in the fight against fibromyalgia treatment-resistant women.

Fibromyalgia is a complex pain-focused syndrome. Previous studies have shown that cannabis is effective in promoting sleep, deepening and prolonging the sleep cycle, and providing good pain relief, compared to regular treatment with antidepressants such as SSRIs and SNRIs. In this new study, the World Health Organization’s Bref Quality of Life Questionnaire was used to characterize the impact of initiating cannabis treatment on the quality of life of women with treatment-resistant fibromyalgia.

This is a prospective cohort study involving women aged between 18 and 70 years diagnosed with fibromyalgia who had exhausted pharmacological treatment for fibromyalgia and started treatment with cannabis. Pregnant women were excluded. In the study, the questionnaire was completed before and after treatment.

The women’s median age was 46 years, with general health and quality of life problems, pain and discomfort, and drug dependence prior to the cannabis intervention. According to the researchers, treatment with cannabis for 30 days showed a marked improvement in the overall quality of life, general health, physical health and psychological domain.

Cannabis treatment did not influence the home environment, according to the study, and shows that it can have a short-term beneficial effect on quality of life through its influence on pain, sleep, and physical and psychological domains, although it is necessary to expand the knowledge about this application with further studies.
