‘Canelo’ Álvarez confirms fight in September with a rival to be announced

The Mexican boxer Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, undisputed super middleweight champion, confirmed this Wednesday that he will fight next September with a rival to be announced.

Álvarez, one of the best boxers of the moment, fought for the last time on May 6, when he retained his super middleweight belts from the World Boxing Association (WBA), World Organization (WBO), International Federation (IBF) in Guadalajara, Mexico. and the World Boxing Council (WBC).

Since he came out of the ring on his return to box in Mexico after 12 years, Álvarez revealed that he is seeking a rematch with Russian Dmitrii Bivol, who defeated him in May 2022, when Canelo failed to wrest the WBA light heavyweight belt from him.

Also, the Mexican-American David Benavidez, official challenger for the WBC super middleweight belt, challenged Álvarez for his sashes, but Saúl has not accepted the challenge and even the president of the World CouncilMauricio Sulaimán, affirmed that he will not pressure his monarch to accept the fight.

Álvarez did not rule out fighting again in Mexico and confessed that he would like to do it at the Azteca Stadium, which in 2026 will host its third Men’s Soccer World Cup.

“Right now I’m not ruling anything out. I do not rule out returning to Mexico and fighting at the Azteca“said the 32-year-old boxer.

Álvarez boasts a record of 59 wins, 39 by knockout, and two losses, against Bivol and former American boxer Floyd Mayweather.
