Canada: major fires have resumed in the east of the country

A sky reddened by fire, and motorists trying to flee, as the flames approach the road. 16,000 people had to escape the fires in Nova Scotia. Everywhere, endless lines of vehicles stretch out. Since Sunday, May 28, a fire has threatened the city of Halifax, in eastern Canada, while dozens of houses have already been burned. For 48 hours, Canadairs, helicopters and fire trucks have been taking turns.

Canada faces a wave of forest fires

A state of emergency has been declared by the local authorities. “This fire has not been brought under control (…) today it has spread less”says David Meldrum, Deputy Chief of the Halifax Fire Department. The wind changed direction, pushing the fire back towards the forest. Only rain could put an end to the fires, but no precipitation is expected in the coming days. For the past few weeks, Canada has been facing an unprecedented wave of forest fires.
