Can the suspended Real Madrid – Partizán play in the Euroleague Final Four?

Real Madrid – Partizán was not without controversy. The second assault had a scandal in the form of a brawl when the match was already resolved (80-95) that put an end to the duel prematurely and consequences in the form of sanctions. The Euroleague Disciplinary Judge made the decision on the fight at the WiZink Center between the rosters. The one who came out worse off, as was to be expected, was Guerschon Yabusele. The Frenchman will not be able to play during the next five matches of competitions organized by the ECA (Euroleague and Eurocup), which in practice prevents him from participating again in the remainder of the continental season.

The other players suspended were Kevin Punter (two games), Mathias Lessort (one game) and Gabriel Deck (one game). In addition, both clubs had to pay a financial fine of 50,000 euros. The Euroleague also clarified that the decisions “are unappealable, due to the nature of the exceptional procedure” since it does not occur during the regular seasonr. In other words, there was no time to resolve a possible appeal. The situation conditioned the rest of the series, which finally fell to Real Madrid (3-2), after a spectacular comeback both in the tie and in the fifth and final game.

None of the sanctioned players will be in the Final Four. Punter and Lessort will not do so as Partizán is eliminated, while Yabusele’s fate was decided after the sanction and will be completed this weekend, when the semifinals and the final or the fight for third place are played. Those would be his fourth and fifth suspension games, which would allow him to play the first game of the next course. Gabriel Deck, who was punished for a match, injured his left knee in the fourth round and it will not be available in Kaunas either.
