Importance of Team Dynamics
The reunion between Lewis Hamilton and his former coach, Angela Cullen, could have a positive impact on his performance in Ferrari. As a seven-time champion, Hamilton’s decision to reunite with Cullen, who has now joined Project44, a team created by Hamilton, may provide him with a fresh start. Cullen’s return to Hamilton’s team, along with Marc Hynes, who has also rejoined to supervise his performance team, may help facilitate a smoother transition to Ferrari.
Role of Angela Cullen
Cullen spent last week in Fiorano while Hamilton made his first laps in a Ferrari car in F1. After 12 years with Mercedes, Hamilton’s F1 world will be completely new, with a new team, work, language, and culture to adjust to. According to Dr. Martin Turner, a sports psychologist at the Metropolitan University of Manchester, Cullen’s return could help Hamilton adjust to his new surroundings. "This could be a good restart for him, returning to a familiar territory with someone who understands him, his objectives, and his needs," Turner explains.
Benefits of Familiarity
The data shows that Hamilton has had a better performance on average with Cullen by his side, scoring 17.8 points per race with her and 10.2 points per race since the beginning of 2023 without her. Turner highlights the advantages of their relationship, stating that Hamilton can be more open with Cullen, leading to better communication and results. "As you know the athlete well, you can have shorter and more impactful conversations. You know what to say and how to say things more effectively because you already have an understanding of what works and what doesn’t," Turner summarizes.
Nonverbal Communication
Turner also explains that having a connection with Cullen allows for better nonverbal communication, facilitating their interaction. "The athlete gets used to what you can and can’t offer, so you can better use the relationship for your needs," Turner says. Additionally, having a perception of high social support can help Hamilton manage stress better, knowing that he has someone to rely on when things get difficult.
