“Camilla will be released tonight”: the revolt of a young girl in a changing Argentina

Fourth feature film by Argentinian director Inés María Barrionuevo (the first to be distributed in France), Camilla will be out tonight tells the story of the youth of his country in full mutation, through the story of the passage to adulthood of Camila, a young girl with a strong character. On view from June 7, 2023.

Camila (Nina Dziembrowski), 17, lives in a light atmosphere with her mother (Adriana Ferrer) and her little sister in the city of La Plata. But when her grandmother falls ill and is hospitalized, the family moves to Buenos Aires. Change of life: Camilla finds herself parachuted into a private establishment with very conservative values.

Camelia weaves bonds of friendship with two comrades, and begins her first sexual experiences simultaneously with Pablo and Clara, without a priori, nor fear of the gaze of others. Like any self-respecting teenager, she argues with her mother Victoria (remarkably played by Adriana Ferrer). Camila is a modern, feminist young girl, free in her desires and in her convictions, which she tries to defend in this universe marked by the weight of religion, where violence and hypocrisy reign.

The momentum of youth

Camila shakes up conventions. His freedom disturbs. A small grain of sand in the machine, the arrival of Camila brings to light the darkest secrets and the violence that wells up in this school dedicated to the golden youth of Buenos Aires. Little by little, Camila also discovers the secrets, and another facet of her conservative grandmother whom she hates, rich and stingy, this “old skin that will soon die” as she says in a somewhat cruel way Camila to her mother in a heated conversation.

Patriarchal domination, male violence, the weight of religion and the awakening of a young woman to life, desire and political awareness, the director Inés María Barrionuevo evokes in this fourth feature film all the questions that cross Argentine society. A society still today marked by old traditions that smell rancid but jostled by the emergence of a political consciousness in the ranks of the youngest.

The young actress Nina Dziembrowski, 18 at the time of filming, embodies with intensity and grace Camila, the central figure of the film, supported by convincing secondary characters. This entire troupe plays with accuracy the momentum of an Argentinian youth who is looking for itself, who gropes and wonders, and who is embarking (for some) on paths different from those imposed by their elders.

Paintings

Inés María Barrionuevo, surrounded by a team made up of 80% women, films this youth in a very neat way, with a work on the light, the framing, the colors, which recalls the work of a painter. The darkness of an apartment evokes the warmth of the outside, the muted, almost lifeless colors say the leaden screed that reigns over the school, and contrast with the brighter colors of the party.

This subtle treatment of the photo effectively supports this idea of an in-between period of life that is adolescence, with its emotional roller coaster, but also the ambiguities of a changing society. But the beauty of the images, almost too aesthetic at times, sometimes interferes with attention to a fascinating subject, magnificently embodied by exceptional actors.
