Cambodian Public Backs Highway 4 Renaming to Donald Trump Road for Peace Role

ชาวกัมพูชาหนุนเปลี่ยนชื่อทางหลวงหมายเลข 4 เป็น "ถนนโดนัลด์ ทรัมป์"

A striking proposal is gaining traction to rename a major highway, Cambodia’s National Road 4, after former US President Donald Trump. This isn’t just about a name; it reflects a deep sense of gratitude. Many in the country want to thank him for his efforts in settling a border dispute with neighboring Thailand.

The idea first surfaced on social media. It quickly found widespread support among the public. This grassroots movement isn’t a direct government initiative. However, it follows a noteworthy gesture from Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. He previously put forward Mr. Trump’s name for a Nobel Peace Prize.

National Road 4 is a vital link, stretching 230 kilometers. It connects the capital city of Phnom Penh to the bustling port city of Sihanoukville. The United States actually helped build this road. It received $25 million in aid back in 1959.

Kin Phea, who directs the International Relations Institute at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, weighed in on the discussion. He sees this idea as an expression of the public’s thanks. He noted Mr. Trump’s timely intervention helped prevent a potential conflict. Mr. Phea also believes it could mark a new chapter in the relationship between the United States and Cambodia. This new phase would honor mutual interests and each nation’s independence.

Beyond just peace, some also see economic benefits. Thum Chita, a 47-year-old local journalist, thinks renaming the road could boost the economy. She believes President Trump could attract more American investors. This, in turn, would create jobs and increase national revenue. She even hopes the US might help improve the road itself. “It would feel like driving in the United States,” she remarked.

Truck driver Sok Saroern, 49, fully backs the proposal. He feels Mr. Trump deserves this honor for his role in stopping a potential war. He also hopes the United States will help widen the road once it bears the former President’s name. Yim Kimse, 48, lives along National Road 4. He confirmed that most people in his area are excited about the name change. He added that people will always be thankful for those who help their country.

Mr. Kin Phea from the Royal Academy of Cambodia pointed out that naming roads after important foreign figures is not new. The country has a history of doing so.

Other Roads Named After Foreign Dignitaries:

  • Xi Jinping Road
  • Russian Federation Road
  • Charles de Gaulle Road

Phnom Penh even has streets named after ordinary foreign citizens. These are people who gave their lives for the country. One example is Christopher Howes, a British bomb disposal expert. He was kidnapped and killed by the Khmer Rouge in the mid-1990s.
