Cambodian PM Affirms No Sale of Phnom Penh International Airport to Private Entities.

Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet has made it clear that the government won’t sell Phnom Penh International Airport to private investors. He stated this during a ceremony celebrating the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the country’s national police force. Manet emphasized that the airport, also known as Pochentong Airport, is a national asset built by King Norodom Sihanouk and will be kept as a backup if the new international airport under construction faces issues. The Prime Minister assured that the government has no plans to sell the airport, either now or in the future.

Preserving National Heritage

The decision reflects the government’s commitment to preserving the airport’s historical and infrastructural significance. Phnom Penh International Airport has been a vital part of Cambodia’s economy and a symbol of national pride. By retaining ownership, the government aims to honor the legacy of King Sihanouk, who oversaw the airport’s construction.

Strategic Backup Plan

Manet highlighted that keeping the airport under state control ensures it’s available as a backup in case the new airport encounters problems. This strategic move underscores the government’s focus on maintaining operational flexibility and minimizing potential disruptions to the country’s aviation infrastructure. The existing airport will continue to be managed and developed sustainably, supporting Cambodia’s ongoing economic growth and development.
