A recent arrest has ignited a firestorm of criticism from opposition figures. They claim it’s a direct attempt to silence those who speak out. The target this time is the father of a vocal critic, sparking fears of broader intimidation tactics.
On July 3, 2025, Um Sam An, a lawmaker from the opposition, spoke out strongly. He condemned the arrest of Sok Sunnareth. Mr. Sunnareth is the father of Sorn Dara, a well-known activist. Mr. Dara often criticizes former Prime Minister Hun Sen. He currently lives in France, where he has found asylum.
Um Sam An believes Sok Sunnareth’s arrest is purely political. He points the finger at Hun Sen for orchestrating the move. The charges against Mr. Sunnareth are for drug offenses. However, Um Sam An insists these charges are made up, lacking any truth. He described it as the justice system being used to pressure and threaten political rivals.
The opposition lawmaker stressed that the arrest has no legal basis. He views it as a calculated strategy. This strategy, he says, aims to divide the nation and break its unity. Um Sam An demanded that Sok Sunnareth be set free. He also called for the release of other political prisoners. This includes Kem Sokha, a former opposition leader.
Um Sam An urged the courts to act. He said they are heavily influenced by Hun Sen. He wants them to quickly restore freedom to anyone wrongly held. This step is crucial, he argued, for necessary political discussions. Such talks could help unite the people. They need to stand together against outside threats and problems within the country.
Sok Sunnareth’s legal troubles began earlier this year. In early June, the Kampong Speu Provincial Court confirmed his upcoming trial. His court date is set for July 9. The charges stem from a supposed drug incident in November 2024. Police arrested him on November 13 in Daek Por Village. This village is in Svay Kraven Commune. It’s also near the Military Region 4 Headquarters.
At the time of his arrest, Sok Sunnareth was on his way to meet a deputy commander. The very next day, the provincial court ordered him held. He faces charges of illegal drug possession. Despite this, Sok Sunnareth has firmly denied every accusation against him.
Many observers share the opposition’s concerns. Political analysts and international human rights groups have weighed in. They see Sok Sunnareth’s arrest as an attempt to pressure Sorn Dara. The goal, they believe, is to stop Mr. Dara from criticizing the government. These experts also note the case has clear political undertones. They add that prosecutors have not provided enough reliable evidence.
As of now, authorities have not responded. They have not addressed calls to release Sok Sunnareth. The same silence surrounds requests for other political prisoners’ freedom.
