Cambodia to Host JBC Meeting with Thailand on June 14 to Resolve Border Disputes

Cambodia is set to host a meeting with Thai officials on June 14 to resolve border disputes.
The meeting will be part of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC).
Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Chum Sounry, confirmed the meeting.

This meeting follows a discussion between Cambodia’s Foreign Minister, Prak Sokhonn, and Thai Foreign Minister, Don Pramudwinai, in Tokyo on May 30.
Both ministers agreed to respect the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on border survey and demarcation.
They also agreed to use all available mechanisms to resolve border issues, with a focus on recent incidents.

Cambodia is committed to protecting its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
However, the country wants to turn its borders with neighboring countries into zones of peace, friendship, cooperation, and development.
This is to benefit the people and countries involved.

“Giving up our claim to disputed areas is not an option,” Chum Sounry said.
Cambodia will resolve border issues peacefully through technical mechanisms and in accordance with international law.

The issue of taking border disputes to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is expected to be discussed during the JBC meeting.
Previously, Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Hun Manet, said taking the dispute to the ICJ would be a way to resolve the issue once and for all.

The Thai government has requested a meeting with the JBC and is committed to resolving the issue through peaceful means, based on law, agreements, and international treaties.
Thailand is willing to negotiate with Cambodia through the JBC, the General Border Committee (GBC), and the Regional Border Committee (RBC).

Thailand is confident that both countries can find a solution based on their good neighborly relationship, ensuring the safety and well-being of people living along the border.
