A recent clash between Cambodian and Thai troops has sparked tensions.
The Cambodian military released a statement.
It said both sides will use the Joint Border Committee to solve the problem.
But Cambodia won’t pull its troops out of the disputed area.
The clash happened on May 28 near a temple in northeastern Thailand.
Cambodia and Thailand share a long border.
Sometimes they disagree about where it is.
General Mao Sophan, a top Cambodian military leader, met with his Thai counterpart.
Their talk focused on reducing tensions.
They agreed to:
1. Keep talking to solve the problem.
2. Stay back from the disputed area.
3. Be patient and respectful.
Cambodia added a fourth point: it won’t move its troops.
It claims the area has been under its control since before a 2000 agreement.
The meeting ended with both sides agreeing on the four points.
The situation remains tense.
A Facebook post from the office of Cambodian leader Hun Sen announced the agreement.
A joint committee will meet in two to three weeks to discuss the issue.
Both countries want to resolve the problem peacefully.
They aim to keep their border a place of friendship and cooperation.
The Thai military had announced a similar agreement.
But it only had three points.
It didn’t mention Cambodia’s claim to the disputed area.
