Cambodia Enhances Military Capability, Vows No Aggression

Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been escalating, but Cambodia’s Defense Minister, Tea Seiha, wants to reassure everyone that his country is not looking to invade anyone. In a speech, he said Cambodia is focused on strengthening its military capabilities for defense purposes only.

This statement came on June 20, 2023, during a ceremony marking the 48th anniversary of the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime. Tea Seiha emphasized that while Cambodia may not have fighter jets or naval ships, it’s working on enhancing its air defense systems, anti-tank weapons, and coastal protection with the help of friendly nations.

He made it clear that Cambodia’s military is not equipped to launch attacks on neighboring countries, including Thailand. In fact, Cambodia has limited weapons, and these are only for self-defense. Tea Seiha drew a contrast with the Thai military, which has showcased its land, sea, and air capabilities.

This assurance comes at a time when the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border remains tense following a clash on May 28, which resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense has accused Thailand of increased activity in the area, including digging trenches and constructing permanent structures, which is seen as a threat to regional stability.

In response to these developments, Cambodia has taken symbolic measures, such as suspending the import of fruits and vegetables from Thailand, closing a border crossing in Preah Vihear province, and temporarily stopping the import of electricity and internet services from Thailand.

Despite these actions, the Cambodian government is also pursuing a path of peace by filing a case with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to resolve the long-standing border dispute. This move is seen as a way for both countries to find a resolution based on principles and fairness, even if the outcome is uncertain.

Tea Seiha also highlighted the failure of bilateral mechanisms, such as the Joint Border Committee (JBC), which has been stalled since 2010-2011 due to disagreements over maps and border demarcation. He accused Thailand of violating a 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) nearly 700 times.

In conclusion, Tea Seiha called on the Cambodian people to remain calm and not express hatred towards Thais or Thai businesses in Cambodia, emphasizing that the two nations have coexisted for decades and should continue to do so peacefully.
