Calhoun 2 homers, Rangers win, Marte homers

Kole Calhoun homered twice and drove in four runs, Martin Perez got his seventh straight decision win and the Texas Rangers beat the New York Mets 7-3 on Saturday.

Calhoun had three runs off starter Trevor Williams in the second inning, and third-year catcher Johan Heim hit his career-high 11th homer to put the Rangers up 4-2.

Both homers hit the second deck in the right grandstand, helping the Rangers hit back-to-back homers for the fifth time this season.

Starling Marte hit a two-run homer early and Eduardo Escobar hit another off Perez (7-2), who had allowed just two homers in 93 1/3 innings in 15 starts.

But the 31-year-old southpaw didn’t allow anything else. He gave up seven hits, two walks and four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. He is 7-0 in his last 11 games as a starter and is a strong candidate for his first All-Star game.

For the Rangers, Cuban Adolis Garcia 3-1 with a run scored. Dominican Leody Taveras 2-1 with a run scored and an RBI.

For the Mets, the Dominican Marte 2-2. Venezuelans Escobar 4-2 with a run scored and an RBI and Luis Guillorme 4-0. Puerto Rican Tomás Nido 3-0.
