Oviedo Appoints New Coach, Loses Key Player to Osasuna

New Coach

Oviedo has announced the appointment of Alexandre "Cacique" Medina as its new coach, tasking him with leading the team to the First Division. Medina, a Uruguayan with 17 years of professional playing experience in Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, and Spain, joins Oviedo after a stint at Granada, where he managed the team for 14 games with one win, four draws, and nine losses.

Medina’s coaching experience includes managing Nacional in his native Uruguay, Talleres and Vélez in Argentina, and Internacional de Portoalegre in Brazil. His last experience as a manager was at Granada, where he left due to poor results.

The Uruguayan coach is set to be presented in the coming days and will take charge of the team’s training sessions on August 15th at El Requexón.

Key Player Departs

Meanwhile, Oviedo has agreed to sell full-back Abel Bretones to Osasuna for 2.8 million euros. The Navarrese club has secured Bretones’ services for the next four seasons, with the transfer deal set to bolster Oviedo’s coffers and allow for the extension of the salary cap for the 2024-25 season.

In related news, Oviedo has already identified a replacement for Bretones in the form of Rahim Alhassane, who is joining from Recreativo de Huelva. The continuity of Carlos Pomares in the position is also being negotiated to ensure a seamless transition.
