Cabrera and 5 pairs of Dominicans stand out at the start of Panam badminton

Dominican William Cabrera and a total of five pairs of Dominican players stood out on the opening day of the XII Santo Domingo International Open Badminton, which is taking place in the Parque del Este Table Tennis Pavilion.

Cabera, a Toronto 2015 Pan American medalist, came out of a four-year retirement, winning two matches to advance to the main draw from qualy.

The experienced badminton player won (21-16, 21-11) in his first match against Peruvian John Li and later advanced after disposing of Chilean Nicolás Monne (with double 21-6).

In other results, the mixed pair of Anderson Taveras and Bermary Polanco from Quisquey won in two sets (21-10, 21-8) against the Chileans Alonso Medel and Quilodran Rosa, to advance to the second round.

On their side, the duo of Daiverson Pereira and Michelle Guzmán Moreno beat (21-10, 21-7) the Chileans Nicolás Monne and Valentina Vásquez, while Juan Alexis Acosta and Yarianna Torres advanced to the next instance by walkover.

In a disputed match, Ernick Zorrilla and Alisa Juleisy Acosta defeated Benjamin Bahamondez and Ashley Montre, from Chile, in three sets (9-21, 21-18, 21-18).

In singles, Creole Yonatan Linarez defeated (22-20, 21-1) Guatemalan Christopher Martínez.

The opening ceremony was headed by the president of the Dominican Olympic Committee, Mr. Antonio Acosta; the liaison between the COD and the Dominican Badminton Federation (FEDOBAD), Rafael Villalona, ​​as well as the general secretary of FEDOBAD, Generoso Castillo, who performed an honorary kick-off to open the tournament.

Some 124 athletes from 30 countries participate in the contest, which is supported by the Pan American Badminton Championship.

The international top category event, in which 40 Dominicans compete, will distribute an economic purse of five thousand dollars and the winners will add 1,750 points to their BWF world ranking.

The matches will continue this Friday from 9:00 in the morning and admission is totally free.

The fair, which is played in the singles, doubles and mixed modalities, is under the general direction of Generoso Castillo, while the supervision of the Pan American Badminton Championship is the responsibility of Ricardo Salamanca and Germán Valdez.

This XII Badminton Santo Domingo International Open is sponsored by the Ministry of Sports, the Dominican Olympic Committee, Claro and the Pan American Badminton Championship.

The assembly of the event is under the organization of the executive committee of the Dominican Badminton Federation. José Luis Espino, first vice president, is in charge of the medical unit and the Covid tests.

Fernando Tiburcio, second vice president, is responsible for line judges and volunteers; the treasurer and technical director, Gregorio Figuereo, is in charge of the technical table.

In the field assembly, it is under the command of co-treasurer Miguel Feliz, while the first member, Henry Casillas, is in charge of the sanitation unit. The second member, Rafael Santin, is coordinating the transportation of the athletes; the third member, Keisy Féliz, is the coordinator of referees, and Paola Moreno together with Arisleida Matos are in charge of protocol.
