BYD Recalls 115,000 EVs in China Due to Battery and Design Flaws

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is undertaking its largest-ever recall in its domestic market, calling back 115,000 vehicles over battery-related design flaws and safety risks. The action highlights potential challenges as the company rapidly expands its global footprint.

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation reported the extensive recall on Friday. It affects both electric and hybrid models from the Tang and Yuan Pro series, manufactured between 2015 and 2022.

Approximately 44,500 Tang series vehicles are included due to a defective traction motor controller. This flaw can lead to circuit board corrosion and a subsequent loss of electrical power, according to the regulator.

An additional 71,200 Yuan Pro cars face issues with improperly installed battery seals. These seals could allow water to enter the battery, potentially reducing the vehicle’s power output.

BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd. will authorize its dealerships to address the Yuan Pro battery issue. They will apply a special sealant and reinforce the battery case on affected vehicles at no cost. This measure aims to restore waterproofing and eliminate the identified safety risk.
