BYD Pivots in Europe: New Atto 2 Plug-in Hybrid Targets EV Skeptics

BYD is pivoting its European sales strategy to incorporate plug-in hybrid vehicles, introducing the new Atto 2 DM-i SUV, as consumer adoption of fully electric models proves slower than initially anticipated.

The Chinese automaker had launched its European expansion three years ago with a lineup consisting solely of electric vehicles (EVs). However, market receptiveness to battery-powered models has been more cautious than the company projected.

This shift in strategy follows the success of BYD’s Seal U DM-i, its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in Europe, which quickly became the brand’s top-selling model on the continent, according to industry publication Autocar. This performance signaled a lucrative path for the company.

The Atto 2 DM-i is BYD’s fourth PHEV offering for the European market, building on earlier models like the Seal 5 DM-i and Seal 6 DM-i. It is the smallest SUV in the brand’s range, previously available only in two fully electric versions.

The addition of a plug-in hybrid variant aims to attract customers who are hesitant to commit to fully electric mobility. This move is expected to bolster BYD’s sales figures in the region.

While most technical specifications for the new Atto 2 DM-i remain undisclosed, it is expected to offer an electric-only range of approximately 90 kilometers (about 56 miles) per charge. This range could allow most drivers to complete their daily commutes without consuming gasoline, as Europeans typically drive less than 30 to 60 kilometers (18 to 37 miles) per day.

Measuring 4,310 mm (169.7 inches) in length, 1,830 mm (72 inches) in width, 1,675 mm (65.9 inches) in height, and with a 2,620 mm (103.1 inches) wheelbase, the Atto 2 DM-i could become the smallest PHEV SUV available in the European market.

BYD’s existing electric Atto 2 models are currently available in Portugal. The “Active” version starts at approximately $34,000, offering features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, a panoramic roof, and a 10.1-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system.

The “Boost” version, priced from roughly $35,600, includes additional premium equipment. This encompasses heated front seats and steering wheel, ambient cabin lighting, and a larger 12.8-inch infotainment screen.
