A bus driver transporting basketball fans died in Italy on Sunday after rival supporters attacked his vehicle with heavy objects, shattering the front window.
The driver was fatally struck near Contigliano when fans of Rieti assaulted a bus carrying supporters of Estra Pistoia. The incident occurred after a second-division basketball game where Estra Pistoia had defeated Rieti.
The attackers used stones, cobblestones, and other heavy objects, according to sports newspaper ‘Gazzetta dello Sport.’ The driver died at the scene.
The Italian Basketball Federation expressed its deepest condolences to the victim’s family. It called the incident a “senseless attack.”
The federation stated it would closely monitor legal developments. It also pledged to take any necessary measures in response to the violence.
