A coach fell into a ravine on Monday in Ecuador in a traffic accident. Nine people died and fifteen others were injured in the fall, according to a new assessment from the operational rescue center. A previous report from the same source had reported eleven dead and twelve injured.

Frequent accidents in the country

The bus was traveling on a road between Guayaquil and Ambato, near the town of Colta in the southern province of Chimborazo, at the time of the accident. The public transport vehicle crashed into a ravine more than 100 meters long shortly after midnight (local time), according to a statement from the Ecuadorian emergency operations center.

Traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death in Ecuador, where the roads are poor, poorly lit and very narrow. Several coach accidents since the start of the year have killed around 20 people.
