Buffy Co-Stars Honor Nicholas Brendon After Actor Dies At 54

Former cast members of the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” are publicly mourning the death of Nicholas Brendon, who passed away in his sleep from natural causes at age 54. The actor’s family confirmed his death on Friday, prompting a wave of remembrances from co-stars over the weekend honoring his portrayal of Xander Harris.

Sarah Michelle Gellar shared a statement early Saturday reflecting on Brendon’s role and their time on the show. “They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen,” Gellar wrote. “To live so near to the spotlight, and never step in… I know you are at peace.” Fellow cast member David Boreanaz also posted a brief message on Instagram, stating, “Some people leave a mark without trying.”

Alyson Hannigan highlighted her personal memories with the actor, writing, “I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP.” She also thanked him for “years of laughter, love and Dodgers.” Emma Caulfield posted a video tribute captioned, “I love you Nicky.” The outpouring of grief comes shortly after the news of his passing was verified by his family.

Brendon appeared on the supernatural drama for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003. Prior to his death, he had publicly discussed significant health challenges. In 2023, the actor revealed he suffered a heart attack connected to a congenital heart defect. He also underwent multiple spinal surgeries to address cauda equina syndrome. His family stated he was actively managing his medical conditions and had recently focused his time on painting.
