Seth Brown hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 on Thursday.

Michael Fulmer (1-2) got the first two outs of the eighth, but Jed Lowrie walked and Brown homered to right field. The Tigers have lost nine of their last 10 games.

Oakland entered Comerica Park this week riding a nine-game losing streak, but won four times in a rare five-game series. The A’s’ only loss came when they were the official home team in the opener of Tuesday’s doubleheader — a game they were originally going to host before the lockout postponed the first series of the season.

AJ Puk (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for his first win since beating Kansas City on Sept. 17, 2019. He missed the 2020 season with shoulder problems and was limited to 13 1/3 innings in 2021.

For the Athletics, Panamanian Christian Bethancourt 3-1 with a couple of RBIs. Dominicans Luis Barrera 4-0, Cristian Pache 3-0, and Ramón Laureano 4-0.

For the Tigres, Willi Castro 4-2 with a run scored, and Javier Báez 1-0. Venezuelans Cabrera 4-1 with RBI, and Harold Castro 3-0.
