Brittany: The tiger mosquito detected for the first time in the region

The region had hitherto been spared. Tiger mosquitoes were detected for the first time in Brittany, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) announced on Thursday, August 26.

More precisely, the insects, larvae and adults, were identified and captured in Domagné, east of Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine).

In order to eradicate them, an insecticide treatment was carried out in the districts concerned, on the night of Thursday 26 to Friday 27 August, by a specialized company.

the right actions to adopt

The health authority recalled some simple actions to avoid the implantation of this mosquito, vector of serious diseases such as dengue and Zika.

It recommends removing and emptying all places and objects that may retain rainwater, sheltering containers that may or may not be used from rain, and making sure that all containers containing water are completely emptied. at least once a week.

To prevent tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus) from coming to lay their eggs, it is also necessary to make sure to hermetically close (with an elastic and a cloth) the openings of the rainwater collection cans.

signal his presence

As a reminder, the tiger mosquito measures about 5 millimeters (smaller than a 1 euro cent coin), wings and proboscis included. He has black and white stripes (not yellow) on his body and legs, and his sting is painful.

Another characteristic is that the tiger mosquito is a diurnal insect, that is to say it bites more during the day, and mainly at the ankles, unlike the common mosquito which, for its part, prefers to attack at nightfall.
