What you need to know:

In her new album, What Now, Brittany Howard expresses heartbreak in her most daring sonic expedition, but without forgetting her roots. Check out the review of this album!

What a sonic journey the very talented Brittany Howard has taken since the now distant year of 2012, when he and a group of friends created a project called Alabama Shakes, effectively a revival of classic genres such as blues, rhythm and blues and southern rock.

From that moment on, his amazing presence was on stage, with a voice
Very powerful and a mastery of the guitar made Brittany one of the best
absolute references of the “classic” rock revival and with some albums On this project he decided to do a solo performance with the excellent Jamie (2019).an album about loss with impressive narrative power.

Howard starts today What now, a dozen new songs that emerge after a breakup that creeps into the lyrics, along with existential doubts in her wonderful voice that will never tire us.

Produced by Shawn Everett (Kacey Musgraves, The War on Drugs, The Killers), the album takes the best of Brittany’s talents and deepens them into the most ambitious songs in her discographyalthough exploration sometimes takes them into unfamiliar terrain that doesn’t have the same effect.

Music as a path to liberation according to Brittany Howard

“What Now” is a thoughtful and sophisticated song about life, right from the start “Earth Sign”Howard screams, “There’s a love out there waiting for me, I can feel it, I can’t see it, but will I know?”

She opens her heart He confesses to us a deeply human fear in an overwhelming instrumentalization, and with supportive voices. Piano, synthesizer, bass and several voices follow a crescendo that seems to have no end.

Somehow, Brittany gives us a deep catharsis as she expresses herself in this albumbut in a different way than the grief he felt over the loss of his sister in Jamie, this time he admits to us that he is wandering with grief but shows hope for the future.

This is repeated in “Every Color In Blue,” the song that showcases Brittany’s vocal range the most, a real madness. Together with a trumpet with a lot of reverb, he takes us to the peak of his singing skills in an absolutely insane song that tells about what he felt, but which cannot be seen with the naked eye.

The song that gives the album its name has a rounded bass line in addition to his voice and any accompaniment a pretty funky guitar adorning a powerful message in which Brittany screams that he has nothing left to regret.

After a failed relationship, he demands release and all he has to do is scream loudly to find his freedom. The guitar work is elegant and highly complex. He drops punchlines here and there and no longer shows his skills in a riff, but in small solos.

“Red Flags”, “Power To Undo” and “Prove It To You”, follow the same line without tiring of the album’s main theme. On the cover, Brittany tells us that she is on the other side, in a delicious contemplative calm.

We’ll get into how she expressed it across all genres, but yes, Brittany Howard has a relentless power that we saw as recently as November at Corona Capital 2023.

The solo of “Power To Undo” gives us goosebumps, Brittany’s distorted guitar comes through with the same power as her voice. What should be highlighted is the production work, which manages to make many distorted elements sound without reaching saturation at any point.

Some confusing explorations without forgetting their roots in this new album from Britanny Howard

The frontwoman didn’t skimp and decided to try everything that came to her mind, and there are a few songs that show her stamp has crossed the fine line into electronic music. “Another day”is a track of just over two minutes that can be quite filling as the percussions are solid and sped up.

With “Prove It To You” we checked to see if we had suddenly changed the album, Howard delivers a house that sometimes contains distorted guitars and seems like a collaboration of his voice in a foreign project. It’s a bit unsettling and the song was able to fit in with the rest of its own mix on the album, making it an exception on a pretty coherent album.

Brittany Howard’s second solo album is an exploration of the
Feelings after a breakup
and whatever sincerity he shows in his songs, with the voice he has, he imprints a real truthfulness.

Roles like “Patience”, They return to their own version of rhythm and blues, in which Brittany Howard sounds best, and then she contrasts the most with songs that perhaps she should have left to an alternative project or an electronic album.

If you’re fans (or loved the album as much as we did), you can find physical and even signed copies of the album here. Brittany Howard is on tour in the US and will visit Europe in the middle of the year.

After what we saw from her in the Corona capital, we hope that she comes alone to a forum in our country to publish new material. And… well, If you’ve already gotten this far, read on because we have a surprise for you.
