Early Season Injuries Take a Toll on Tennis Players
The Brisbane Open 250 final was cut short, lasting a mere 13 minutes. Reilly Opelka, the towering American player, was forced to concede due to the physical demands of his previous matches. Having defeated Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals and Giovanni Perricard in the semifinals, Opelka’s 2.11-meter frame could not withstand the strain. With the score at 4-1 against him, he chose to prioritize his energy for the upcoming Australian Open, set to begin on January 12.
The first week of the tennis season has seen a surge in injuries, affecting several top players. Naomi Osaka was also compelled to withdraw from the Auckland final, joining a growing list of players who have suffered setbacks. Grigor Dimitrov and Jordan Thompson, both competing in Brisbane, Tomas Machac and Alexander Zverev in the United Cup, and Juncheng Shang in Hong Kong, have all fallen victim to injuries.
Multiple Casualties in Auckland
The Auckland tournament has been severely impacted by the injury bug. Jaume Munar was unable to participate after reaching the semifinals in Hong Kong. Giovanni Perricard, the Brisbane semifinalist, was removed from the list, and Reilly Opelka is set to follow suit. As a ‘special exempt’ entrant, Opelka was scheduled to face Mariano Navone in the first round.
