“Bridgerton” return lavishly and with an obsession: to outdo themselves

After becoming one of the most successful fictions in the history of the Netflix platform, the clan of the "Bridgerton" come back this friday Willing to put the story of Daphne and the Duke behind and to continue advancing through an increasingly lavish and intense universe, which seeks to surpass itself and consolidate the series for its successive deliveries.

The responsibility of overcoming the magnetic power of the Duke of Hastings (played by British-Zimbabwean Regé-Jean Page), who does not appear in the seriese, now falls to the eldest son of the family, Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (played by British actor Jonathan Bailey), and his decision to find the perfect wife this season.

“Every person that comes into the series, including Regé, it enriches this world and it is a universe that is always expandingso I hope that the fans are also very excited to see what is to come, ”actor Jonathan Bailey, protagonist of the main plot, tells Efe.

In a brief conversation, in which he is accompanied by two of the new faces of the series – the British actresses of Indian descent Simone Ashley and Charithra Chandran – Bailey explains that it is necessary to “begin to understand” that in this project one of the main keys is that there are many “characters that enter and leave”, willing to say that there are “many different ways to fall in love”.

At least one for each Bridgerton brother, protagonists of the best-selling novels created by Julia Quinn that Netflix began to adapt with the love story between the oldest of the females (played by Phoebe Dynevor) and the sought-after Duke of Hastings. Released in December 2020, the series broke all records for the platform.

This particular exaggerated and pompous version of the novels set in the competitive world of London’s high society during the Regency (19th century) -created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shonda Rhimes-, accumulated in its first 28 days on Netflix more than 625 million hours viewed and became the most viewed English-language production in the history of the platform.

A month later it was announced that the series would have a second season (There is already a third and a fourth confirmed) and shortly after it was known, to the chagrin of millions of fans, that Regé-Jean Page would not be in it. Phoebe Dynevor does appear in this installment, but in a very minor role.

The central plot of the series takes place during a new debutante presentation season in which Lord Anthony, aware of the responsibility he has as the firstborn, decides that he should marry and search for the woman who has all the qualities to become the Viscountess of Bridgerton.

Anthony’s search for a debutante who meets his impossible standards seems fruitless until Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) and her younger sister Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran) arrive from India with similar purposes. Then a love triangle will arise that will shake the viscount, who will be torn between what is convenient in the eyes of society and true love.

“It is very exciting to be in the series, though obviously it can be really overwhelming to walk into such a successful project. You feel like the new kid at school, but we were lucky to come as a unit, like the pack of sisters,” Chandran told Efe.

In Ashley’s opinion, the pride is also double for “being part of this incredible show that represents many different people,” she explains to Efe, referring to one of the most notable characteristics of the series, the racial variety and full equality.

Together with this loving trio, other stories will continue to unfold, with the rebellious Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) giving a lot to talk about, with the (no longer so mysterious) Lady Whistledown -narrator of the series in the voice of Julie Andrews- revealing secrets and moving threads with their weekly serials and with the Featheringtons inventing new tricks to avoid falling.

And, wrapping everything, there is the majesty of the court headed by queen charlotte (Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, played by Golda Rosheuvel), her choice of "diamond of the season" and the lavish dances of the time, which will be even more pompous and ceremonial.

“Every time there is a dance, it is always the biggest and most dazzling we have ever seen (…) We are always trying to improve ourselves. This season we have created absolutely magical spaces for the dance scenes, ”says the series’ production designer, Will Hughes-Jones, in an interview provided by Netflix.

All of this, he acknowledges, has to do with the fact that the success of the first season created a kind of “second album syndrome”, which is “when you’ve done your best work and then you have to do it even better”, and for that reason the overcoming It has been the obsession at all times, which has been reflected from the first flower to the last headdress.
