Brett James, 57, Country Songwriter, Dies in Plane Crash: Tributes Pour In

The country music world recently said goodbye to a beloved talent. Brett James, a respected singer and a hit songwriter, died in a plane crash in September 2025. His passing left a hole in the hearts of many in the music community.

Just a few years before, at 50, James had a fresh spark for his own music. He told Songwriter Universe in a 2020 interview that he wanted to re-evaluate his career. After writing for other artists for so long, he hadn’t put out his own songs in about 25 years. He felt inspired to create music again without worrying about genres or radio hits. He knew his natural voice was his only guide for his new sound.

He called his EP, I Am Now, a "Nashville soul record." He saw himself as a "soul singer by nature." He simply let his creativity take over the process. James took a break from his daily songwriting work. In just two weeks, he wrote around 11 songs. He said those two weeks were the most fun he ever had writing music.

His Impact on Country Music

Many knew James best for the chart-topping songs he wrote for other stars. He penned 26 hits for various artists. These included "When the Sun Goes Down" for Kenny Chesney and "The Truth" for Jason Aldean. One of his most famous works was Carrie Underwood’s Grammy-winning song, "Jesus, Take the Wheel." He shared with The Tennessean in 2020 how special that song became for everyone. He felt very blessed by Underwood over the years. James believed the right song finds the perfect voice, and Carrie’s was it. He noted how radio helped make it something that could "change the world a little bit."

A Look at His Personal Life

Beyond his music, Brett James also had a rich personal life. He was previously married to Sandra Cornelius. Later, he found love again and married Melody Carole Wilson in August 2021. Carole shared her joy on Instagram in January 2022. She wrote, "On August 21, Brett and I got married ❤️ How lucky am I :)"

James was also a proud father of four. He and Sandra Cornelius had three sons and one daughter. His children even inspired his song, "True Believer." He once told American Songwriter in 2020 how much he loved seeing them cry as they heard the song. He cherished that moment with his daughter, knowing they would always have that song.

Tragic End for a Country Star

The music community was shocked by his sudden passing. James was 57 years old. He was one of three people on a plane that crashed in North Carolina. Sadly, no one survived the accident.

Stars Remember Brett James

News of his death brought an outpouring of grief and respect from fellow country artists. Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, Sara Evans, and Gavin DeGraw all paid tribute to his memory and legacy. Aldean took to X, expressing his deep sadness. He wrote, "My heart broke learning about the loss of my friend Brett James tonight." Aldean added that he had "only love and respect for that guy and he helped change my life." He felt honored to have known and worked with James, sending thoughts and prayers to his family.

Dierks Bentley called James "one of the greatest songwriters in our town." He remembered James as a "legend" and a "fellow aviator." Bentley shared a personal story about writing "I Hold On" with James. He brought verse ideas after losing his own father. James took those ideas and crafted the chorus. Bentley noted that when he sings the song live, he thinks of his father and the day they wrote it. He said James "got it right away, dove right in." Gavin DeGraw simply described James as "one of the greats."
