Brazil qualifies for the World Cup with victory over Colombia thanks to Paquetá’s goal

Brasil se clasifica al Mundial con victoria sobre Colombia gracias al gol de Paquetá

An unusual World Cup in the Middle East, at the end of the year and after the pandemic, will have some normality. Brazil, the inevitable guest at these parties, will be present again.

The Brazilian team became the first South American to qualify for the World Cup in just over a year on Thursday, thanks to a 1-0 victory over Colombia with a goal from Lucas Paquetá.

The Lyon midfielder broke the stiff resistance of the visitors in the 72nd minute, in a play in which Marquinhos intercepted a ball from William Tesillo at the exit of Colombia and served for Neymar.

The Paris Saint-Germain star initially leaked the ball towards Paquetá, who entered the area and fired a right cross to beat goalkeeper David Ospina.

It was one of the few opportunities generated by Brazil in the match.

QUITO (AP) – Ecuador knows how to suffer.

Once again insurmountable in its rear and with the first scorer of Piero Hincapié, Ecuador defeated Venezuela 1-0 on Thursday to clinch third place in the South American qualifiers for the Qatar World Cup.

The only Ecuadorian goal came in the 41st minute with a header from Hincapié, a player for the German club Bayer Leverkusen. The 19-year-old central defender scored his first goal for the national team, jumping to connect a free kick taken by Gonzalo Plata from the right side.

“My first goal in the national team, there will be many more with the blessing of God,” said Hincapié. “It was important to work as a team and know that it was not going to be easy, that it was going to be tough from the beginning to the end, and we were able to get all three points at home.”

The home victory left Ecuador with 20 points, behind Brazil and Argentina, with 31 and 25 points, respectively. Chile, Colombia and Uruguay, all with 16 points, chase La Tri.

The top four from South America qualify directly for next year’s World Cup. The fifth will play an intercontinental playoff.

ASUNCIÓN (AP) – A colossal failure by the goalkeeper gave Chile a 1-0 victory over Paraguay on Thursday, which provisionally placed them in fourth place in South America’s qualifying rounds for the World Cup.

Antony Silva’s own goal in the 56th minute, when he failed to clear a corner kick taken by Alexis Sánchez, led Chile to its third consecutive victory to reach 16 points.

Sánchez considered that the victory came “thanks to the efforts of the entire team.”

“Playing against Paraguay is always very difficult but all three points were achieved,” said the Inter Milan striker.

The harvest of La Roja is identical to that of Colombia and Uruguay, but with a better balance of goals. The Colombians fell back after losing 1-0 to leader Brazil in Sao Paulo, a result that sealed the Verdeamarela classification. The Uruguayans will host Argentina this Friday.

LIMA (AP) – With three goals during a wild half-hour stretch in the first half, Peru regained aspirations to return to the fight for tickets to the World Cup in Qatar by crushing Bolivia 3-0 on Thursday.

Gianluca Lapadula opened the scoring at nine minutes, Christian Cueva widened the difference at 31 and Sergio Peña got the third goal at 39, for the locals to prevail without disheveled at the National Stadium

Peru was placed in 14 points, to two of Chile, that owns for now the fourth and last direct ticket to Qatar. On Tuesday, the Blanquirroja will visit Venezuela, the worst team in the tie.

Behind Chile by difference of bowls and also with 16 units is Colombia, in a fifth place that grants the right to play an intercontinental playoff.

“We needed all three points. We were always serious on the field. We knew that Bolivia was going to push a bit, ”said Peruvian goalkeeper Pedro Gallese. “They are in the squad in the qualifying phase.”

Bolivia is penultimate, with 12 units and the urgency to beat Uruguay on Tuesday at the height of La Paz, if it does not want to definitively distance itself from the teams with real World Cup expectations in CONMEBOL.
