The Brazilian court has denied the habeas corpus petition filed by the defense team of one of the two Peñarol fans who have been detained in Rio de Janeiro since October 23. The detention followed incidents with the police during a previous match against Botafogo in the Copa Libertadores.
According to lawyer Jorge Barrera, the foundations of the appeal will be presented to a court in Brasilia on Friday. Barrera expressed confidence in the outcome, stating “there will be freedom in this cause.”
In relation to the second detainee, a hearing for the Habeas Corpus resource has been scheduled for February 25, two weeks from now. Barrera mentioned that background defenses have been filed in the various cases where complaints are being processed. He also took to his social network X to express support for the detainees, saying “to continue working and supporting everyone at home.”
Barrera, along with lawyers Rodrigo Rey, Roger Gomes, and Eduardo Benfica, forms the defense team for the Peñarol fans. The majority of the 23 Peñarol supporters who were initially detained have been released and are currently awaiting trial under house arrest in Brazil.
